Cutouts

Cutouts or ‘leftovers’ as I prefer to think of them, have become a key aspect of my making process and an increasingly essential aspect of demonstrating my process as Art in its own right, and as an aspect of understanding the work it makes as Art too. As my work pivots on the concept of Memory - these ‘leftovers of making’ and of a sign of ‘me being present in the process’ , act as the raw constructs of the memory and yet are the attributes that can be continually reshaped. The cutouts can make multiple legitimate memory others. They also function as a collection of abstract language forms, which I archive, and can then reuse in other context.

My work with Cutouts have been exhibited at The Art Centre Newtonards Northern Ireland as an installation piece in connection with Transitions and Clay.

I first started using literal plastic cutouts as a method to construct flat memory structures for Transitions. Prior to this forms were constructed freehand through overlaying with either paint or printing ink, which is a process I still employ. Following Transitions I explored the plastic cutouts further on residency at Joya Art Ecologica Spain where Clay was formed.
